Dr. Robinson

Presumed Innocent

Dr. Robinson is the psychiatrist Rusty Sabich saw on a few occasions, a private professional connection that became relevant when Robinson appeared on the prosecution’s witness list after Rusty’s indictment. His brief part in the case shows how the investigation reached beyond physical evidence into Rusty’s personal history, while his refusal to speak kept that history from becoming a police statement.

Identity and Connection to Rusty

Rusty describes Dr. Robinson as a psychiatrist he had consulted a few times. The book gives no further account of their treatment or of Robinson’s professional background; his significance is defined by the limited contact and by the possibility that the prosecution might use him as a witness.

Place in the Prosecution’s Case

In assessing the contents of the prosecution’s cardboard box, Rusty notes that Tommy Molto has listed roughly a dozen substantial witnesses, including scientific experts and people connected with the investigation. Robinson is among them. Rusty suspects Molto included his former psychiatrist to unsettle him, comparing the tactic to methods Rusty himself once used with defendants to make clear how thoroughly their lives had been examined. That suspicion is Rusty’s interpretation, not a stated explanation from Molto.

Rusty also connects Molto’s discovery of Robinson to the investigation of his finances: Molto had subpoenaed Rusty’s bank account in Nearing, and Rusty believes Robinson’s name was obtained from his checks. The detail makes the witness list feel less like an abstract legal document than a map of how ordinary records could expose a defendant’s private associations.

Contact with Sandy Stern

After the indictment was returned, Dr. Robinson saw Sandy Stern’s name in the newspaper as Rusty’s lawyer and contacted him. Robinson said the police had attempted to interview him and that he had refused to make a statement on grounds of privilege. Stern reaffirmed that position and said the defense would not waive the privilege. Robinson therefore remains a potential witness named by the prosecution, but the available account establishes no police statement from him and no testimony at trial.
